Huddler creates a climate change forum section!

In addition to being a big Huddler user, I'm also a big Yahoo Answers (YA) user (particularly their Global Warming sub-section).  Unfortunately, YA is run somewhat incompetently (to put it as nicely as I can).  For example, my account was suspended for no apparent reason with no warning or explanation, there's another user who's copied my avatar and username and is impersonating me with no reprocussions, and valid questions and answers are frequently removed by YA staff for no good reason.  Essentially the site has been taken over by a few global warming "skeptics" with multiple accounts who have learned how to successfully abuse the reporting system.

There had been some discussion among some of the section's top contributors to start a discussion forum where we could be free to discuss climate change science and policy and news, etc. without having to worry about having our posts removed, not being able to respond to others except through answer edits, etc.

After my account was suspended, Dawei sent me a message suggesting that we create such a discussion board.  It occurred to me that Huddler already had a message board set up and a friendly, helpful, and highly competent staff who might be willing to set it up for us.

And voila, the climate change discussion board has been born!

Of course, this isn't just a forum for former YA users.  Anyone is more than welcome to post news/science/etc. and ask questions.  There should be a number of users with a large breadth of knowledge on the subject participating here.  I'm pretty stoked about it.

And the new Huddler users should explore the full website when they have the opportunity.  It's a great place to learn about green products, review the ones you've used/own, write or edit wiki articles, discuss green subjects outside of climate change, etc.  Huddler rocks!

Yeah there's lots of useful tools like links, inserting images, even YouTube videos.  You can also subscribe to specific threads or forums or other users and get emails when the thread/forum are updated or when the other user does something new.  The subscription tool is really useful.

I have to say it's pretty great; combining News & Policy together was a good idea.

By the looks of the posts that have already been moved into here from other sections, it seems Huddler has been needing this section for a while as much as the Yahoo users have.

Heh yeah I've started a lot of climate change discussions in other sections of the forum.  It's nice to have a specific section for them now.

Hooray climate change discussion!  I have a feeling I'm going to learn a lot from you guys.  Here's a quick question...as some of you may have noticed, we have a system of tagging (I'm working on tutorials which will hopefully be up by early next week if not tomorrow).  Right now, you can see our miscellaneous tags here.  We have a "cimate-change" tag, but what else would make sense?  How would you and other users be interested in narrowing the topic focus (beyond Myths, Science, News & Policy).  For example...would it make sense to be able to tag with Oceans-And-Oceanic-Ice-Melt?  Let me know what you think!

We're glad you're enjoying it!  And of course, as usual, keep us posted if you have other feedback.

That's tricky.  You could have a tag for climate change effects related to oceans, another for ice, another for feedbacks.  You could just do one general tag for effects of climate change.

Maybe climate change effects, climate change feedbacks, climate change myths...

I think we've hit jackpot.  Thanks Dana.  I look forward to sharing good info and learning more about climate change.  The Yahoo site had its charms, once, but lately it's a chore and fewer decent questions to respond to.  I have faith that you'll be a great moderator and we've seen the last of the so-called skeptics gang.

Good to see you here Amy.  I don't mind terribly if we get a few "skeptics" over here as long as they don't try and dominate the forum as they are on YA.  I suspect we won't see many because of the nature of the forum - discussing new science and policy, not the existence of man-made global warming.

After less than 1 day we've already had some good discussions and I've learned quite a bit, so thus far it's been very successful!

Hey Dana, thanks for starting up this forum. I think it'll be neat to have some conversations with people who are genuinely interested in learning and teaching about the subject (read: not deniers). I'm looking forward to posting some more when I get some free time.

One quick note for those who are new to Huddler, we have a pretty robust subscription system so that you can be kept apprised of the content you actually care about, and ignore what you don't. Once you're subscribed to things, when you're logged in to the site, your home page will display only recent updates on topics you care about. Also, you can receive email updates in real-time, daily, weekly, or not at all.

Keep an eye out for "Subscribe" buttons on user pages, wikis, forum threads, etc. Also, if you're most interested in Climate Change, go here:

http://greenhome.huddler.com/tag/climate-change

and click the "Subscribe to this Tag" link in the top right. That way, any threads, wikis, etc. that are tagged with "climate-change" that get updated or created, you'll know. Make sense?

thanks deej. its a good set-up. i'm used to proboards so this is luxury! i notice you have a 'dont follow me' button above the related content box on the right, is that ever needed? and how on earth does it work?

shame all the cool product stuff is no good to me here in england, but its nice to drool over it ;-D

If you notice, as you're scrolling around inside of a forum thread, that "related content" box will "follow" you down the screen so it stays in frame. We did it this way because in most forums, once you're in a thread, you have no ability to navigage elsewhere once you're done reading without scrolling waaaaaaay back to the top, or hitting the back button.

That said, if you think the box is annoying, you can say, "DON'T FOLLOW ME" and it won't :)

lol! i get it. i thought it meant other users!

i like it but i can see it could be annoying to some.

dana, should we have a 'solutions' section? many of the solutions i am interested in have both a science and a human component, so i am unsure weither to put them in science or policy.

Hmm well I'd say you can probably just pick the one that it fits under best.  For example, if you're talking about some form of sequestration, I'd put it under Science.  If you're talking about political action, do policy.

It doesn't particularly matter which one you choose - there's only 3 sub-categories, so we'll see it!

That's the other great thing about the tag subscriptions - so long as it's tagged properly, then everything is easy to find because it will show up for people who are subscribed to those tags. Does that whole paradigm make sense?

Thanks gerda!

yes! i'll start using the tags. it took a day to sink in, i use them all the time bookmarking.

oh, no, sorry, cant work out how to add tag such as 'solutions' not in the list.

You can see the full list of miscellaneous tags here...but here are some of the ones that have to do specifically with climate change:

carbon-dioxide
carbon-sequestration
climate-change

climate-change-solutions

Intergovernmental-Panel-on-Climate-Change

Kyoto-Protocol

As the discussion continues, we can always add more that make sense!

Nice tags stins.

I asked 2 questions on Answers today, and both were removed for no apparent reason.  Nice to know the site hasn't improved.

The good news is that I was able to add the information here too and it wasn't deleted ;-)

*update* make that 3 questions, 3 removals.
