Europe's latest craze: electric bikes

Who thinks this craze will cross the pond?

My electric bike is no batmobile, but it makes me feel like a superhero.

The motor is so quiet it's easy to forget it's there when I'm pedaling through the streets of Paris -- only I move much faster than a regular bike and I don't sweat. When I ride uphill, it feels like someone is giving me a push.

The silver Chinese import that I bought for 300 euros ($470) might not look as flashy as Christian Bale's wheels in "The Dark Knight," but it is much cheaper to run and kinder to the environment too.

All of which helps explains why electric bikes are one of the hottest buys in Paris this summer -- and are filling the streets of Amsterdam, Beijing and beyond.

I definitely saw this first hand this summer in Beijing. While I wouldn't call it a majority, there were A LOT of them whirring around, and far more than I see in a typical day in San Francisco.

I now have 2 normal bikes, so I don't think I'll be grabbing a 3rd in my tiny loft anytime soon, but next time I'm through Sacramento area, Dana will be getting a call...

Erm actually I sold my electric bike a few months back to help pay for my iMoto.  They definitely are a lot of fun to ride.  My only problem with it was that the range was a little weak so it tended to die a couple miles from work/home, and pedaling that heavy sucker with no battery assistance was a helluva workout.

These days I'm biking to work once or twice a week (depending on the heat), but on a regular road bike.  Not quite as fun, but no worry about running out of juice, and a better overall workout.

As long as you have an electric bike with sufficient range for your needs, it is a good way to get around.  You get a fair amount of exercise, but not too strenuous, and the electric assist is fun.  Similar to riding a scooter.
