These Come From Trees

I just started a new class in a building I have not been inside before.  I went to the classroom, set my things down, and found the bathroom.  When I went to wash my hands, I turned to the paper towel dispenser, where I saw this:

Such a simple message, but pretty effective.  I felt guilty as I pumped a tiny piece of paper towel from the dispenser, which left my hands still slightly damp but used less tree.

Sounds like they did some field testing and saw about a 15% reduction in paper towel use where these stickers were posted.  They are pretty cheap to buy, and free for use at educational institutions...

Haha that's a good idea.  I'm going to get some of those for the paper towel dispensers at work :-)  When I was in there changing this morning (from bicycle to work clothes) I heard a guy take like 3-4 paper towels!  He could have used one of these stickers.

Kiwi wants to get these to stick on the printers at the city he works at...I think that's an even better idea than paper towels- think how many things people print off unnecessarily, or on just one side...

I wonder if this idea could be adapted to issues like water consumption, or reminding people to turn off lights?

When I was a kid the local council came to our school and told us about water conservation. Then they gave out stickers that said "You're a drip if you let the tap drip". They also had one that reminded you to not run the tap while brushing teeth etc.

Perhaps a sticker about leaving lights on and burning coal/air pollution might be effective?

This is a cool idea, put a little guilt into the people. I can see a situation where it backfires though, some crabby person using way more than they need, just to be an a**... Hopefully those people are few and far between though.

I put one on the bathroom paper towel dispenser at work Tuesday the morning when I got there.  By the time I left work, somebody had torn it off!  But then yesterday when I left work I put another up there, and it was still there when I left today.  We'll see if it lasts the weekend or if the janitor takes it off.

This is a great idea! It is always a good idea to remind people of the importance of conserving paper items. I do think these stickers would work well on printers too.  I know at my work we are always using way too much paper.  And although we recycle, it is still better not to be wasteful in the first place.

This is very nice.

I think we should stick that sign next to the printer at my work! Maybe people would think twice before printing out mundane things. That would be better left un printed
