GM has announced that they are stopping production of SUV's at four factories in North America:

The Hummer brand may be discontinued or sold:

And best of all, they've given the green light to the Chevy Volt. You'll be able to buy one in 2010!

All in all, great news. Market forces at work. I hope oil keeps going up.

Nice!  The lead story on Yahoo yesterday morning was on 'the death of the SUV'.  I'm loving it.  Americans are complaining about gas prices, but they're still only about half what they are in Europe.  If that's all it takes to motivate people to buy fuel efficient cars, then I'm all for $4.50/gallon gas..

It's pathetic that we can't get european or japanese cars in the US unless they are like 15 years old or some crap. The European market is already flooded with fuel efficient vehicles unavailable to Americans. :(

Yeah, but Europeans are willing to drive much smaller cars than most Americans.  Plus a lot of their fuel efficient cars are diesels, which can't pass US emissions tests (which is one of the reasons they're not as great as people claim).

Now that fuel prices have gone high enough such that Americans are buying fewer SUVs and more small cars like the SmartCar, it looks like we're headed in the right direction in terms of fuel economy.

Cars are status symbols and a good indication of people’s vanity or stupidity. If you live in a large city, don’t own an item you need to frequently tow, don’t have a large family, owning a SUV with great lexus parts is not practical. Financially, it is not a sound decision for a middle class or working class person, and it seems that it has taken a long time for people to realize this

The truck market continues to worsen, so unfortunately we must temporarily suspend production. But this good news about production mix demonstrates our long-term commitment to our North American operations and to our team members, supplier partners, and communities where our plants are located
