Ban Plastic Water Bottles

Hi All,

I have wondered for years now, what is wrong with good old fashioned tap water?  Not only is the water in bottled water often not "pure from the spring" as promised, but more importantly, with all of the great reusable bottle options out there now, there is absolutely no need for people to continue to use/allow plastic bottles.

Plastic bottles are one of the most abundantly used containers, and one of the worst things for the environment.

We can start eliminating this waste by petitioning our local and state elected officials to ban their use, petition school boards to ban them from our children's schools,  ask local colleges and universities to stop providing them on campus....the list goes on and on.

One small step at a time, we can change this practice, and get back to drinking water from the tap--an environmentally friendly means of staying hydrated.

I'd love to hear back from anyone who has had success locally on this front!

Hi Melissa,

I agree with the tap water being a viable source of drinkable water. I think years ago when we noticed a different taste from town to town we started buying bottled water. It rolled into the convienent answer to hydrating on the go. When I started to become aware of problems with ingesting chemicals from plastic containers I switched back to tap water but hooked up a on the counter filter by Aquasana. I made a great move. My family loves the taste I don't worry about chlorine in the water and any other trace elements get filtered out. I purchased a few stainless water bottles and hardly ever buy bottled water. I do store bottled water in the basement for an emergency but everyone should have that.

You are not alone in the bottled water situation. It's just getting the word out about other options.

I agree we should ban plastic.  I read that a major cola company now uses bottles from natural resources such as bamboo and grasses. I believe where there is a will there is a way.

So keep on banning then maybe a way will open up.

I think that the best combination is drinking clean tap water from a glass bottle. There's a perfect glass water bottle on the market (http://www.flaska.co.uk) that can restructure water in 5 minutes and make it softer. Such water can enter body cell and hydrate it from inside. Very unique drink bottle called Flaska made in a biotech company.

Hi. This is something I was thinking about. Here in Africa it is sad that Bottled water is seen as a status symbol and everyone wants to be seen carrying plastic bottles around.Bottled water has a twofold effect on our environment here. First a lot of ground water is being siphoned off to manufacture Mineral Water while we are destroying ground cover for Lumber and putting up high end developments on farm and forest land. Long term- we deplete our ground water and speed ourselves off to desertification.

Secondly the waste. There are no effective plants that recycle plastic and what would that entail anyway? Would it pollute the environment as well. Tie both these things with the fact that you do have to be careful about the water you drink here especially if you do not live in a major town or as you are traveling. There is a need for clean safe drinking water.

My domestic water comes from a bore hole. But I bought a water purifier that works just great. I put my water in a stainless steel water carrier and that works perfectly for me.

It would be amazing though if there could be portable purifiers units that could purify a liter at a time that you could carry around with you. I work in film and that usually means that we are constantly walking around in really harsh conditions in places with no municipal water.

Its a catch 22.

Hello all,

There is also concern to the over exposure of chlorine in our water supply. Chlorine introduced into the water supply reacts with other naturally-occurring elements to form toxins called trihalomethanes (THMs), which eventually make their way into our bodies. THMs have been linked to a wide range of human health maladies ranging from asthma and eczema to bladder cancer and heart disease.
