new air fresheners for home

With all the various forms of air fresheners for the home, are there scents or delivery methods that are better than others?

Is there a new way to buy the refills or mechanism itself that would be easier? I don't even know what brand I have.

I'm researching air care products for a class project, and am wondering what people look for in air care. Is it improving air quality? Is it to cover smells? Is it to have a pleasant scent that conjures up nice memories or thoughts? How important is the green aspect?

I'd appreciate any insights you might have. Thanks!

I tend to be allergic to many of those things.  Shampooing carpets and furniture, along with a good filtration system in the HVAC system seems to be the best alternative for me.  If it's an ongoing source of dirty smells (like my cat's litter box), then hmmm lol ..... not sure how to answer that one.

Be careful of aerosol air fresheners. These products topped the recent EWG's findings of the worst in house cleaning type products. They can contribute to asthma and have dangerous ingredients. An old real estate/house cleaning service trick to make your home smell great is to put some vanilla extract in a coffee cop and put on low-medium heat in the oven. Makes the whole house smell amazing.
