question on organic cotton

I've heard different versions of what organic cotton is and where it comes from.  Can someone tell me exactly what goes into growing and creating organic cotton, and where it is most often grown?

Hi Cheryl,

I think this is a pretty good resource site for organic cotton:

There are a few methods out there for organic cottons for example Pima Cotton which resembles Egyptian cotton. Pima cotton produces a very durable, thick fabric that lends itself to items that experience a significant amount of wear. Pima Cotton is very popular for bedding, as its softness and comfort blend well with its ability to be washed regularly. Pima cotton is also extensively used in dress shirts and dresses, as well as towels and other items around the house.

I have my own line of Organic Baby Clothes and I use Pima Cotton exclusively. You can totally feel the difference when compared to chemically processed cottons.

Hello Cheryl!!,

Organic Cotton is the same process as organic vegetables. Any pesticide or other hazard chemical chemical is used on the cotton crop.

So in this process we do not only protect the final client.

We take care all the production chain, from the cotton seed to the apparel.

You can check this small video:

You can find organic cotton everywhere where is produced the conventional cotton: Pakistan, India, Egypt, China, Australia, Brazil, Peru, etc.

But just Peru and Egypt have the best Pima Organic Cotton....if you didn´t feel it, you cannot compare how soft it is.

To know the difference, you can check:

Hello!

I just posted a blog entry on organic cotton this morning! Here's a section from it:

"Many people choose to buy organic products because it sounds like it must be good for the environment - and they are correct; however, I think it's important to know in more detail how our choices are impacting the planet. Discovering the facts for myself helped me become more serious about choosing organic. It's not just a preference for me anymore, it's a lifestyle.

ThreadsForThought uses plenty of organic cotton in their products, which is why I am going to focus mainly on the industry of growing cotton. Any plant can be grown organically, but sadly most crops in the United States are treated with pesticides and toxic fertilizers, and are usually genetically engineered to withstand the abundant use of these toxins.

Cotton in its ORGANIC form is slowly becoming obsolete.
As of 2010, 93% of cotton grown in the United States is genetically modified. That's right, only 7% of cotton farmers in this country are still growing natural, environmentally selected cotton. Worse yet, accidental cross pollination is contaminating the fields of organic farmers, often unknowingly, further decreasing the chances of survival of the completely natural cotton crop. A truck carrying GM cotton can slowly spray loose seeds over an entire organic farm as it passes it by. I fear that eventually, there will be NO organic cotton left in this country (or the planet)!"

It's a pretty long post, so if you want to read the rest of it, you can go here: http://threads4thought.blogspot.com/2012/01/organic-cotton.html

Let me know if you have any comments!

Thanks,

Amna
