Sustainable or Organic Clothing?

Thread Starter

I run a small apparel company out of Philadelphia (http://adelphiaapparel.com) and I want to the most eco-friendly product out there.  I have heard mixed reviews on the bamboo production and kind of want to stear free of that product.  Would it be more eco-friendly to use a recycled garment or an organic cotton garment?

Thanks All,

I think hemp clothing is very sustainable as well, not only does hemp grow fast it cleans the earth and from what I understand it cleans the air better then trees do!

The clothing made from hemp also lasts along time. We really need to have some stylish options for young teens!! I can not find clothes for my 12 yr old daughter. I am teaching her the importance of reading labels and making purchasing decisions on the info provided and clothing is starting to be a problem!!! most are not earth friendly organic or ethically made....please help!!

Hi!

We made the choice for our company to produce all of our apparel from 100% recycled fiber as we feel it is a better environmental option. There is no need for land to grow our raw materials, we are keeping waste from landfills, very little water and energy is needed to produce our fabrics, and we don't need new chemical dyes to color our fabrics. Please read about our company and products:

the recycled product is probably a greener choice, as long as you feel the quality is excellent for your clients :).

We build quality and durability into our products as we believe that this is a big part of being sustainable. Products should wear well and last long as well as be easy to care for.

I design and craft sustainable fiber apparel and will not use bamboo fabrics because the process of converting the raw material to a fabric is very toxic. It is possible to use a mechanical process that does not use all the horrible chemicals but it is generally too expensive and seldom used.I prefer to use organic cotton, hemp, organic linen and some soy blends(some people object to soy b/c there is not a guarantee that it is GMO free but the fiber is made with the leftovers from soy bean oil and other soy products so I think of it as being recycling.).Good luck with your shop!

Soulrole,

I agree with you about bamboo. I did extensive research because our company was planning to use bamboo as our material source for our products. I found that the majority of claims were unsubstantiated and certifications not current. I see out there now that rayon is also being portrayed as an eco-friendly material, "naturally occuring rayon".

Thanks,

Mark
