Would you recommend using broken solar cells when building your own solar panel?

I am planning to build my own solar panel. A friend of mine suggested me to purchase broken solar cells while I start building one. He said it'll still work and I could save quite a lot of money instead of buying new ones. I do also want to spend less when I start doing this. So do you think it's still effective once I use broken or damaged solar cells? What would be the pros and cons if I do use it?

Hope to see some replies. Thanks!

Take the following into account:

  1. New solar panel prices drop quickly.
  2. Energy tax credits (Federal 30% rebate + states & utilities incentives) are available only for new solar panels
  3. Solar panels are exposed to severe weather conditions and new solar panels can have a life span greater than 20 years

Bottom line: not many are rich enough to play with used, broken or home made solar panels.
