What are Urea based preservatives?

Urea is an organic chemical compound which is the waste produced when the body metabolizes protein. It is a compound not only produced by humans but also by many other mammals, as well as amphibians and some fish. Although it was first extracted from urine, it is now most commonly made through a synthetic process.

The largest issue with urea based preservatives is that they release formaldehyde, a well known carcinogen, as they age. This begins as soon as you have opened your product.

According to a 2009 study by The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, two known carcinogens, 1,4-dioxane and formaldehyde, were found in dozens of bath products for babies and kids including a number of major brands. Though these ingredients were not technically on the label, they were present in the product after it had been opened.

I was shocked to see Sodium Laureth Sulfate in a a popular kids' brand of toothpaste.  It's pure evil to do that to babies.

I'm so glad to hear other people talking about these things. I've seen other videos by "the story of stuff" and am glad you posted it here. It's so scary to start finding out the toxins that are in everyday products. One of the most outstanding things to me is the toxic smells in new products, proof that the toxins used in it's making is still alive and well. Toluene is one of the most commonly used cosmetic toxins, and yet for the most part its flying under the radar of consumer consciousness.

@Joe-  take a look at colloidal silver for acne.   @cpetersen  I am not aware of any problems with SLS and SLES.  I know that they are derived from coconut oil. Please advise.  Thanks

I recently watched that video about cosmetics, and it's not surprising at all. I'm continually both amazed and saddened by how many "organic" and "natural" products totally aren't so. There has to be a better way to healthily synthesize purely natural ingredients for consumers to use without hurting themselves or the planet.

I try to make my own body care as much as possible, and the things I buy need to have as few ingredients as possible.
