Are wind turbines eco friendly or not?

Hey Guys! I have this question in my mind... Are wind turbines ECO friendly or not?

There are lots of speculations about "Wind Turbines" . Some said that wind turbines are ECO friendly because of the fact that wind turbine is a device for harnessing the kinetic energy of the wind and converting into mechanical energy by means of a rotor, and then the mechanical energy into electricity by means of a turbine. It is a 100% clean, renewable, and independent source of energy.

. Some also said that wind turbines are not ECO friendly. The said that it has numbers of drawbacks such as birds like strong winds. It is very common for migrating birds to fly into wind turbines and get killed. Wind farms can also disturb your television reception if you live in the surrounding area.

To support this are some references about this discussions:

So what can you say about this??

I live in an area that has literally thousands of wind turbines. (commerical ones)  I have been near them numerous times and never seen bird carcasses laying about. They do run almost constantly so I would assume they are efficient.  Smaller home size are not. They are not mounted to 300 foot towers so there is not a constant wind source.  I have researched them and for me they are not feasible. But for that matter neither are solar panels. We have low electricity use 400 kwh/month, and modest rebates available. Payback is 18 years.

Thanks for your reply whirnot and I'm glad to know that you're in the wind turbine side... It's just that until now I can't really understand why most people don't know how to appreciate wind turbines..

Solar domestic water heaters are a good investment. Windmills and solar electric...not so much, unless it's the only available alternative.

Flaunting "greenness" is mostly a faddish thing for people who can afford it. The rest of us do common sense things to economize often at the expense of convenience or comfort.  There's a lot of belt-tightening going on, and that's really not a bad thing. Waste not, want not. :)

It seems like the bird issue could be fixed with the addition of a cage. For massive turbines this would add a lot to the overhead, but for home users it wouldn't be so bad.
