BMW lifted the veil this week on its planned battery-powered car, in an indication that it is serious about building a new class of vehicle and delivering substantial numbers to showrooms by 2013.

BMW has crash-tested prototypes of the chassis and frame of the electric car, and this month it will break ground on a factory in Moses Lake, Wash., to produce carbon fiber for a lightweight passenger compartment.

BMW is taking a different path than competitors by designing the so-called megacity vehicle around its electric drive system from the start.

Sounds very cool, although probably quite expensive.  Still it's good to see more and more automakers seeing the EV writing on the wall and developing more electric cars.

I think it's more of a high tech expensive toy for the rich than a car for the majority of us.BMW just want to make money. They'll have to make affordable and durable electric automobiles for the majority if they really want to conserve the environment.

They make very efficient cars that look nice and are great to drive, I'm sure this forthcoming Megacity will be like this too.

I agree. This just looks like a PR move, doesn't it?

I am becoming more sceptical in cars, housing, food, finances.  Got an expensive slap with an electric vehicle (can not charge or secure it here: so it is gone), my fully paid for condo got red-tagged and chained up, food coming from who-knows-where, income cut.

Now someone in my town is trying to get small to disappear completely; this person is sharing that hatred with links to nearly impossible accidents and are referred to almost daily.  Hard for me to argue with blood, guts, gore, or even torn-up crash dummies.

Renderings are great - I hope 1 or 2 are built for the "here and now" rather than in coming years.
