According to a new survey, 80% of survey respondents said they would be likely to purchase bread, crackers, cookies, cereal, or pasta products containing GM wheat “if they were produced using sustainable practices to feed more people using fewer resources such as land and pesticides.” And consistent with the 2008 survey, 77% of respondents said they would buy foods produced through biotechnology if they helped cut pesticide use.

The survey also found that when the production of genetically modified (GM) foods is framed in such a way as to promote sustainable practices, consumers are more open to including them in their diets.

The rub of course is that GM produced foods, including GM wheat, aren't sustainable.Of course people debate GM foods on and on, but in my mind sustainable is also safe - something GM food is not 100% proven to be and in fact there's research that says it can cause long-term harm and research that shows GMO crops use more pesticides, not fewer.

I'm not totally one one side of the fence yet with GM foods because I just don't think there's enough long-term research either way, but it's astounding to me that simply by framing GM in a sustainable way that people would accept it no questions asked.
