May is National Bike Month

In case you missed it, May is National Bike Month. Obviously more biking, less driving is excellent for your health and the planet so here are some of my favorite bike resources to help you celebrate this annual event.

San Francisco is voted one of the top 50 bike friendly cities, but I have to admit, I would be pretty nervous to bike downtown.  The city has been limiting some car traffic on Market St. cutting through the city but it can still be pretty busy.  Obviously light rail isn't as eco-friendly as biking to work but at least it's a step in the right direction!

Sacramento has some good bike month activities.  Today was bike to work day, too, at least in our region.  Our business park offered a free breakfast to bikers.

I pledged 300 biking miles for the month this year.  My office pledged around 1,400.

I am so  thankful that I can ride my bike to work.  The health benefits alone are worth it, but when you consider the current gas prices is certainly pays to go green!  Does anyone have any suggestions on how to ride your bike to work and look presentable when you get there?  My office is business casual, so it is pretty easy on a really nice day, but when it's raining or really hot I drive so I can look ok.  Shoes are always a challenge also- it is hard to find something that doesn't slip off the pedals that is appropriate for the offfice.  Here's a site that has lots of styles: shoe mall.  Please take a look I am open for suggestions.   Also if anyone knows how to stay fresh when it is 90 degrees outside, I am all ears.

I only live about 5 miles from work - new job smile.gif.

And I bought a new hybrid bike!

Personally, I think one of the best ways to introduce kids to green living is through biking.  It's fun and good exercise.  And if people start practicing green activities young, they are more likely to continue them into adulthood.

Here's some info on  Student Environmental Action Coalition or SEAC (last paragraph).  It's doing just that - encouraging biking - for kids who want to make a difference.
