Canada Getting New Certification for Organic Produce

The European Commission recently announced their new organic food label, the USDA just set new rules for organic milk and meat, and now a new certification aimed at promoting organic produce and creating fairness and equity in the food system is scheduled to be available to Canadian farms in the near future.

The Agricultural Justice Project is a collaborative effort between the Rural Advancement Foundation International-U.S.A., Farmworker Support Committee, Northwest Organic Farming Association and Florida Organic Growers. This non-profit social justice labelling initiative, is helping to develop social standards for farms and food businesses in organic and sustainable agriculture. This all makes it sound like a Fair Trade project more so than organic but focus is actually in both areas.

There's little info yet about the actual new certification, but if you've got any news of course feel free to post.

The EU is making a new label but they still have restrictions on fruit/vegetable shapes and sizes. They did relax them a bit but much has to go to cattle food or waste as it 'ain't EU pretty'!

İ read the EU Brussels stuff daily here - much of it is even more silly than Washington - far more silly!
