European Commission announces new organic food label

Outgoing European Agriculture Commission Mariann Fischer Boel announced the winner of a contest to select a new label design which will go on all pre-package organic foods produced in Europe starting on July 1.
 

The brand new ‘Euro-leaf’ was designed by a German student and was selected by some 130,000 people voting on-line over the past two months. About 3,500 designs were originally submitted.
 

According to Boel, "This exercise has raised the profile of organic food and we now have a logo which everyone will be able to identify with. It's a nice elegant design and I look forward to buying products carrying this logo from July this year."


The new Euro-leaf label will be obligatory on all pre-packaged organic products produced in any of the EU Member States. To wear the label the product must meet necessary organic standards.

I think I like it. Its definitely better than the plain "Bio" label here in Germany. Often a symbol speaks more to people/consumers than just letters so hopefully this will help spread the awareness of organic foods.

Hey there 8cology - welcome. I agree, it's a noticeable and in my opinion very attractive label. Better than a plain old boring label for sure.

As a European myself I think it is clear and easy to understand. It is also very attractive to the eye and once it has been mentally registered, then I think it will be a quick glance assurance.

All products are coming into line with an agreed Organic quality across Europe, so buying a product in UK, for example ( with this symbol), should be a reassurance that the quality is the same as any other European nation.

A leaf is a great tribute to nature - not just a simple 'O' or lettered symbol.

I agree, the leaf is much more nature minded and makes a better impact than say, an O. It is easy to spot too - good point.

The leaf looks great and just recently I found some of those organic chocolate gifts on the web and I was so happy to see that you can also order organic gifts now. Might seem like a small step to some but for me it is really something.
