Give Your Cleaning Cupboard a Nontoxic Makeover

Is your home hiding a toxic hot spot? In most households it’s as close as the cabinet under the kitchen sink. That’s where millions of families store their cleaning products. These grime-fighters may make quick work of stains, grease, and other daily messes, but the vast majority have a dirty secret: they’re made from hazardous synthetic chemicals that are toxic to people and the environment.

Could this include those cleaning products your own family regularly sprays, sponges, and splashes around the house? If you’re using conventional products, the answer is probably yes. But it’s hard to know for sure because cleaning product manufacturers don’t have to reveal the exact ingredients in their formulas, and they aren’t required to test these formulas for safety before they’re sold.

No wonder many people are surprised to learn that everything from popular all-purpose cleaners to leading floor polishes have been found to contain substances linked to cancer, asthma, reproductive and developmental  disorders, neurological problems, hormonal disruption, and more. Over time, as we breathe and absorb small amounts of these chemicals during and after housekeeping, they can make us sick.

That’s why healthy home experts recommend giving your cleaning cupboard a nontoxic makeover. Transforming this single space from a toxic hot spot to a green safe-zone will go a long way toward making your entire home safe for your family.

Start the makeover by collecting every cleaning product that has the words “Poison,” “Warning,” or “Danger” on its label. Also grab those that contain synthetic chemical ingredients, or that don’t list all ingredients. A good rule of thumb says if you can’t pronounce it or don’t recognize it, you probably don’t want it around!  Take these cleaners to your nearest hazardous waste collection site for safe disposal. You can find out where to go by doing a simple internet search for your city, state, and the term “hazardous waste.” Just don’t pour anything down the drain, where it can get into the waterways and pollute the environment.

When you’re done, restock your cupboard with today’s new generation of healthy cleaning products made from safe ingredients obtained from natural sources like plants and minerals. Use these green products around the house to make sure you’re cleaning up a mess, instead of making a new one!

Hi Adam,

What about the toxic house plants, petrol in the car, antifreeze and a thousand other parts of daily life? Natural substances can be just as dangerous as man made. People might also consider being responsible with articles in the home. İ agree that would be un American in many ways - to actually accept responsibility for what one does or doesn't do. Usually the choice seems to be to take zero responsibility and let the lawyer find someone to blame.

Driving to work is far more dangerous than most of those 'dangerous' substances you just mentioned.

What is the criteria to become a 'healthy home expert'? İs there a course at the university to take or this just a name people give themselves to feel important and smart - also to try to convince others that they know something extra?

The statement, 'Over time, as we breathe and absorb small amounts of these chemicals during and after housekeeping, they can make us sick' while not really untrue is not really true either. İ believe there are far more phobias fed by this kind of a statement than actual sickness.

Please note that İ am not saying that people should not consider changing over time. Over time and with thought - not that it is necessary to run out and 'do it' today.

After a lifetime in industry where we worked with toxic substances all the time İ have a bit more difficulty getting excited over the crisis.

Possibly the most important part of all, and especially long term, is the proper disposal of old or waste materials and contaminated materials.

Keeping materials out of reach of tiny hands is important. Everyone will always need to remember this - even if everything in the kitchen is reasonably safe there are medicines. Common materials that can possibly be found in a green home might include:
a. alfatoxin - natural material (organic) mold on plants İ believe
b. lime sulfur - pesticide used in organic gardens
c. aspirin
d. caffeine
e. nicotine

I think its the latter.  A self-appointed position

I will say that I agree with the gist here - that by cleaning out your cup-board of dangerous or toxic household chemicals you can prevent some sickness/contamination AND at the same time help protect the environment. Sort of hitting your two-fold goal.

But I also agree with you, Russ, in that many of these so-called "safe" or natural chemicals can be equally detrimental, if not more so.  Mother Earth produces much that is beneficial but also much that is not safe for human consumption, after all.

Hi Adam,  Today the clickable ad came through - yesterday İ couldn't see it.

The product reviews indicate people like your product with the only real negative being price.

As far as everyone emptying out closets and from under the sink immediately and 'if you can’t pronounce it or don’t recognize it, you probably don’t want it around!' sounds a bit draconian to me.

Should household materials be a earth friendly as possible? Sure! Should people get in a panic to get there? Not really. Everyone should be moving in that direction though.

Best of luck with the product and if it is good it will stand on it's own without any frantic tactics or strange explanations İ expect.
