LED's are the next thing up - still pricey for anything but early adopters to whom the price is unimportant for the most part. That will change in the near future though.
The spectrum of light needed by plants is referred to but nothing is provided as to what lamps are used or anything about lamp outputs. This statement seems to be misleading in trying to promote LEDs.
Certainly NASA would use LEDs in space due to the low power consumption. Their solar panels are also something like 1000 times the cost of what we see on the market as well.
