It Takes 60 Barbie Dolls To Screw In An LED Lightbulb

She may be perky and pretty, but do you really know what lurks beneath Barbie's pristine plastic exterior? Green living enthusiasts might re-evaluate their allegiance to the surprisingly well-preserved 50 year old blonde icon once they realize just how massive her carbon footprint is --http://www.greenwala.com/community/blogs/all/3654-It-Takes-60-Barbie-Dolls-To-Screw-In-An-LED-Lightbulb

Does this information make you think twice before giving your daughter (or future fashion designing son) a brand, spankin' new Barbie for Christmas?

I was a kid eco-nightmare I guess because I loved Barbie so damn much :(  There are some toys that I compromise on now for my own son Cedar - for example Legos. NOT eco-friendly but he loves them. I keep waiting for an eco-friendly version.

I was just like you -- crazy for ballerina Barbie...in fact, then I graduated onto a lifesized "Barbie head" complete with fake cosmetics. That's how I learned to create French braids, so I guess that's something. I don't have children, but I would be a little torn about giving a girl in my family a Barbie now that I know what the whole manufacturing process entails. But, on the flip side, children should be allowed to enjoy their innocence.

I had the life size head too! I have a child, Cedar, but he's a total "boy" boy so no Barbies, but if I had a girl I might still buy her some if she wanted them. I'm pretty militant about a lot of green things - organics, NO paper towels, no plastic baggies, no toxic lunch gear (even if Cedar likes the design better on the toxic ones), and so on. With that in mind Cedar has been raised on green as much as possible, and I don't think it's fair to ban everything, especially since I ask him to make his own choices about a lot of green issues. That's why he gets Legos.

Well done Jennifer - Kids need to be raised right (whatever that is) but they are kids! They deserve to enjoy life and not just have adult beat into them.

Thanks Russ. Actually that's my take on adults and kids. You can't convince people to go green at any age if you're psycho about it. Small steps and positive encouragement is better IMO. I am extreme about many green issues but I try hard not to push extreme green tips on others without also saying, you can take or leave some aspects of the tip.
