Outside the box Christmas trees

There are lots of ways to have a greener Christmas tree this year, but there are also some think outside the box type ideas that could work for you and your family, such as...
  • Decorate with various wreaths, garlands, or just some cool boughs around the house.
  • Buy a super tiny tree that's different and unique. I saw this cool little organic lemon tree recently, but if you're looking for a more traditional holiday look, a small rosemary tree (well, bush, but it'll look like a tree) works too.
  • Plant a tree from your family in honor of your favorite organization - it doesn't have to be a green minded organization. Many cemeteries, national forests and parks, hospitals and more enjoy trees.
  • Along the same line of thinking you can forgo the family tree for one community minded tree at a school, nursing home, or a non-profit. You still get to decorate a tree but many folks get to enjoy it, not just one family.
  • Make your tree. In the past my son and I made a recycled tissue paper tree but you can make a tree with all sorts of materials; wood, paper (recycled), etc.

Are you having a real tree, reusable tree, or some other tree this year?

Very cool list.

I'm going with a real tree this year....but it's living!  I bought a very small living Christmas tree last year and it's growing away in my backyard in a pot so I'll just bring it in (*cough* ask my boyfriend to bring it in...the pot is really heavy and we have to come up a flight of stairs...).

Last year the city of San Francisco did something pretty cool where they "rented" "Christmas trees".  When I say rented, I mean people paid a small fee to have a tree delivered and picked up.  When I say Christmas tree, I mean they were a wide assortment of trees that where potted and were destined to get planted on SF streets after the holidays.

We have some rental services here in Oregon I believe as well. I'm not sure what we're going with this year. We had a pretend tree (tissue paper) last year, I think a tiny tree the year before, and the year before that a tree that had to be cut down - we were building a house, and it was on the plot of land, but after we used it for other stuff. I think a key point is that you have a lot of options. It's not all give up the tree to stay green. Good luck on your living tree and the stairs!
