Eco Carpet

Something I ran across today:

One in every four plastic bottles recycled in North America become luxuriously soft Mohawk Carpet.

Mohawk continuously seeks ways to recycle, reduce, reuse and renew. As a leader in flooring innovation, Mohawk recycles nearly three billion plastic bottles each year. And since 1999, more than 17 billion bottles have been recycled, keeping more than one billion pounds of plastic out of landfills.

That's a pretty cool link. I think though, even eco-carpet can be one of those toxic issues in your home, unless you never wear shoes inside. We track a lot of pesticides in on our shoes (as I'm sure you know). Still, if you must have carpet, this is one of those much better options.

Here, you are expected to remove your shoes before entering a home - your own or others. Not to do so is considered quite rude. You are provided with slippers by your host at the door virtually every time. I am not so worried about the pesticides (unless from your own lawn or garden) but streets are covered with a fine coating of most anything - most of it something you would never dream of wallowing in.

I took this green building class once (very very intro) and they talked about a company that upcycled carpet.  Can't remember the name of it though.  They used carpet tiles.  Mostly I think it was for commercial uses.

Here I only know about three families who actually take their shoes off at the door - and two of those families are actually from elsewhere, not America! It's so different all over the world. Here I am concerned about pesticides because also too many people use them here on their lawns.
