There's a ton of research going on in that area right now. I read recently about one company working on algae-based fuel for air planes. Yeah...mid-way in that CNN piece:
One species may be best suited for jet fuel, while the oil content of another may be more efficient for truck diesel.
It'll be interesting to see the developments in the next year or so!

I keep hearing things about using algae for biofuels, but haven't really researched it yet. Interesting article though.
"Kertz said he can produce about 100,000 gallons of algae oil a year per acre, compared to about 30 gallons per acre from corn; 50 gallons from soybeans."
Now that's impressive. Sounds like it's still a decade or two away from being a significant fuel source, but sounds very promising.
