Los Angeles County to vote on adopting a "climate change mitigation and adaptation fee"

Should Drivers Pay for Global Warming?

"Voters will decide whether to approve a "climate change mitigation and adaptation fee" under  a proposed law being debated by the state legislature. It has already been endorsed by the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

The money would be used to fund public transportation and other projects that ease  traffic congestion at a time when the state budget is strapped and money from Washington has all but dried up. Critics are hopping mad. They say that it exploits public sympathy for global warming in order to fund projects that are already sucking down taxpayers' dollars."

As discussed by myself and stins on Yahoo Answers, a lot of people are freaking out because 'omg, global warming tax!'.  However, they're neglecting the fact that the Los Angeles County residents get to vote on this proposed fee.  If there's going to be a 'global warming tax', it will be self-imposed.

Funny how people will one day scream about how liberals are trying to turn the US into a socialism, then the next day argue that people should be stripped of their voting rights if they don't vote "the right way".

This is a good topic of conversation. The write-up at the Wired blog is good reading that inspires some good debate-type questions.
