Advice Needed: U.S. Organizations that Support Use of Safe Cosmetics

Dear All,

Peter Kindersley, the owner of Neal's Yard Remedies, Great Britain (award-winning certified organic skin care since 1981), would like to know which groups/organizations and certifying bodies in the U.S. we should apply for membership to. We just opened the first direct sales certified organic skin care company within the U.S. (2 weeks ago today!) We've already done the paperwork to support the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, but we want to be affiliated with and support all national organizations that promote the use of TRULY organic ingredients and ecological, holistic lifestyles. Thanks for your suggestions!

Best,

Susan Cann

I write a ton of green beauty product reviews, and honestly I look for a few simple things, because I'm not totally on board with 3rd party testing and certification (it could mean something, or it could mean you paid a fee). To me the most important issues are as follows...

The company is hooked up with Skin Deep - they're not perfect, but I like to see products there. AND that the company is working with the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics (which you're doing already).

That the product carries the Leaping Bunny Symbol, which is the only U.S. assurance that no new animal testing is used in any phase of product development by the company, its laboratories, or suppliers.

If the company is claiming organic, I want to see the USDA Organic symbol - not that it's 100% trustworthy, but it's better than companies who just claim with no back up.

That all product ingredients are in plain sight at both the website and on the packaging AND that I can figure out what those ingredients are with little trouble. Are they toxic? Biodegradable? Will the ingredients harm me or the planet?

That the packaging is minimal and recyclable. AND that the product has a recycling reminder on said packaging.

That's what I look for. I don't tend to pay attention to other stuff because what really matters to me as a green product reviewer and user is that the company has actually made an ethical product. Getting backing from other organizations means less to me, because I only, in the end, trust myself to research a product.

I just noticed your reply to my post; I was never notified that there was a response so it took me this long to find it! NYR Organic is everything you mentioned and more (https://us.nyrorganic.com/shop/susancann/area/values/) and it would be wonderful if you could write up some reviews for us--we're new to the U.S. (just started selling on Sept. 14th) and people don't "know" us yet. We're the first certified organic home party sales plan in the U.S. We aren't certified by the USDA, but we are certified organic by the Soil Association of the UK, which has much more stringent standards! The owner, Peter Kindersley, will be visiting California in March for several days if you have any questions for him you'd like to have answered!

Oh no! Maybe you have your account set up to not get email notice right away. Well in any case I'm glad you saw it now. I was wondering if you got the info. I'm sending you a private message with some more info. :)

I didn't get the info (email). Please resend to agreenerhome@gmail.com

Thanks for your responses! BTW, we're booking the hotel rooms now for our "mini-conference" in March--it's all so exciting! It'll be held in either Berkeley or Foster City...

Best,

Susan
