Awesome new technology, out there by you Cristina

I am still reading the paper on Human Rights and Universal Responsibility and I plan to write a blog about it when I'm done. It's nothing new, it's from the 2003 United Nations World Conference
on Human Rights in Vienna, Austria by the Dalai Lama.

Anyway, in the meantime, I wrote a blog about this one. It's an awesome new technology they are testing out there in Emeryville, CA. It's a bacteria that can be used to produce good old gasoline, carbon-neutral gas, at that.

Anyway, go read, my blog and/or the April PopSci. It's good stuff. navyjohn.blogspot.com

Wow, a GM bacteria to be made into carbon neutral gas?  That's pretty wild.  I'll definitely have to read up more on Amyris Biotechnologies.  Maybe we'll even take a Huddler fieldtrip out to Emeryville.

Thanks for sharing that, John!

More specifically, they're developing a gasoline (and also diesel and jetfuel) biofuel substitute.  Their website is very sparse on the info, but I found an interesting story about them here.

"Our fuels are hydrocarbons. They're designed, as closely as possible, to resemble components in current gasoline, in petroleum diesel, in jet fuel," Neil Renninger, Sr. VP of development and co-founder of Amyris Biotechnologies, told Cleantech.com.

"Using synthetic biology, Amyris re-programs microbes to function as living factories for the environmentally-friendly production of high-value chemicals.

"Our skill set, what we bring, is the ability to engineer microbes to make hydrocarbons. That's where our expertise lies. Changing the cellular metabolism, so that instead of, for example, making ethanol, our bugs make hydrocarbons," he said."

"Amyris expects to start pumping out its biodiesel commercially in late 2010 or early 2011, with its bio-gasoline following a year or two after that. And another year after that comes the company's bio-jet fuel."

Sounds like a cool company.
