Awe-Inspiring Termite Architecture -- The Ideal Model For Sustainable Human Homes

Believe it or not, termites are the answer!

Humans continue burning the midnight oil working out complex algorithms that will give us viable sustainability solutions for our future dwellings, but it turns out that the tiny winged insects had it right all along.

Thanks to the power of high-tech 3D imagery, scientists have finally figured out the ins and outs of termites' eco-friendly architectural skills in the hope that they will soon be able to apply the simple yet sophisticated systems to human structures that work with Mother Nature rather than against her.

In cleaning our street (picking up garbage) I recently picked up a piece of foam insulation from an old fridge I believe and the thing turned out to have been selected as a termite colony home. Except for the outside skin the termites had hollowed out about 90% of the interior only leaving passage ways, floors and supports.

Amazing how many of the little beggars were in it.

Here, all to often clean, means NIMY (not in my yard) or NIMC (not in my car).

The termites natural ventilation and I expect cooling is certainly a path to pay attention to and natural draft is priced right! The use of a solar chimney to create a natural draft is easy and often practical in a new design - a bit harder to retrofit though. We have this concept in our new home and while everyone is complaining about the hot summer we have yet to turn on the AC.

A few days have been a bit on the warm side but still totally surviveable without AC.
