Greening The Night (& Our Light) With Genetically Tweaked Bioluminescent Trees

It boggles the mind to consider just how many lights illuminate our city and residential streets, and though some places (such as New York) draw on the grid far more than others, it's a global conservation issue that needs to be addressed, stat.

Well, efforts are underway to green up the way that we keep our streets well-lit...but who knew that it could become such a figurative and literal exercise with the proposal of eye-catching, power grid free bioluminescent trees!

What do you think of this form of alterni-light?

Is it the wave of the future or a dangerous way to test the limits of Mother Nature?

Hi elizaliegh - The simple fact that it is GM will drive a lot of people up the wall.

Of course virtually all food/ornamental crops, even in organic farms, are of the GM type though often through a slower process of sorting through natural seedlings to find what is called a 'sport'. The 'sport' being the one plant in a million which has a different characteristics and desirable characteristics than the parent.

It is a good idea but one that will take an immense amount of work and considerable time.

Personally, I'm really intrigued by the idea but freaked out by the science. The last thing we need is mutant GM plants invading our landscape and decimating all that Mother Nature truly intended.

Outside of wild trees, weeds and a few wild grasses I don't think you can see much of what you refer to as 'all that Mother Nature intended' today.

Is it the wave of the future or a dangerous way to test the limits of Mother Nature?

The above statement is a bit of scaremongering - This is something I will not see in my lifetime.
