Giving Up Jesus Juice & Java To Shrink Your Water Footprint

Between escalating greenhouse gases, wild-n-wacky weather patterns and water being the new "oil", all I really want to do these days is drown my greenie sorrows with a six pack or two.

But nooooo, now even THAT's off limits if I give a hoot about water footprints and being an upstanding eco-citizen!!

How does this info affect your greener lifestyle choices?

Are you compelled to cut yet another mini vice out of your life to "save the planet?"

Until society as a whole starts to make changes, individual action is pointless so drink up.

My cynical point is that the people who care enough to stop drinking these products are such a small part of the overall market the loss wouldn't be felt and there would be no significant reduction in carbon footprint of society overall.  Another way to say this is that there is no way to get people in significant numbers to voluntarily limit their consumption of an affordable luxury.  This is why we are where we are, and why nothing will change until change is forced on us by rising costs due to resource limitations.  By then, of course, it will be too late.

Agreed gcnp58! Not my coffee!

I don't agree that small actions can't make a difference, but I do see gcnp58's point. It does seem silly at times the things I refuse to use; paper towels, plastic bags, disposable soap pumps and so on when so many other people I know can't live without them. But then you do see bigger trends. Like the National Gardening Association did an eco study this year and organic gardening is growing by tons of households, maybe soon, enough to make an impact.

Like Russ I can't give up my coffee - I'm in the Pacific NW, not sure which would be more frowned upon, me giving up green living or coffee. I'm guessing the latter.

I am originally from the Pacific NW as well - Oregon - a small town in the middle of no where called Madras. It was a small town 50 years back and still is.

Here in Izmir, we have a small garden this year and will expand it next year. I'm not sure it is cost effective compared to the local farmers market but it is more fun.

Jennifer is right, small actions can count and the gardens are a good example. I generally disagree with protests as I feel there are more positive actions to make - to each their own.

In my years in industry I believe (in general) we improved steadily over time - maybe not as fast as we wanted but improvements have been made with a long ways to go.
