Universal Lubricants to open eco-friendly refinery

So I came across this article today: triangle.bizjournals.com/triangle/othercities/wichita/stories/2009/08/10/daily44.html

Quote:

State and national dignitaries will be in Wichita Monday to help Universal Lubricants LLC mark the opening of its new eco-friendly oil refinery.

Universal says the re-refinery was designed to maximize efficiencies and minimize environmental impact. It marks, the company says, a “definitive step” toward a clean alternative to used oil disposal.

Russ: I would love to get your take on a eco-friendly oil refinery.

Hi green-bohemia,

What I read into it from their site is that they recycle old oil, lubricants, solvents and antifreeze. Many items can be reused after treatment/re-refining rather than being discarded or burned. If not reusable then they need properly disposed of.

They talk about a new re-refinery coming on line soon - later this year.

Industry and automotive has to have lubricants so better do it in a proper manner. Also a barrell reused is a barrell that does not have to be imported.

It is a big deal to track and handle old oils and easy to make a real mess. If these guys do it well it is a good thing. Historically, this type of business has been one of the nasty ones.

This meaning of green is reducing the amount of mess we make in this old world - important in itself. Nothing in common with organic types though.

Hard to tell how OK this company is without someone actually seeing their site. They talk a good game though. I will see if I can learn anything more on the net.

From what little I could find they seem to be just another business that has some green color on their web site and call themselves green. They are recycling - that is true.

The reporting and record keeping they do is mandated by the EPA/OSHA etc.

There is no information about their nre refinery - the site just says 'check back'.
