My daughter wants to dye her hair black. Is there a natural hair dye out there? (I prefer temporary), thanks

There are actually some natural hair dyes! All these folks recommending doing patch tests just to make sure you don't have allergies to the ingredients, but none of these natural options have PPD which is one of the big offenders in a lot of traditional hair colors. I actually just came across this article about non-toxic hair coloring on HairBoutique.com which has a lot of good facts: http://www.hairboutique.com/tips/tip993.htm
But in terms of some natural options...EcoColors Hair Color and Herbavita Herbatint are two permanent options that both have black dyes. For semi permanent, Light Mountain Natural Hair Color is henna based and I think it's supposed to last 6-12 weeks or so. Herbavita also makes another hair color called Vegetal Color which might actually be a good option to start your daughter on as it lasts for about 6 shampoos. That way she can decide pretty easily if she actually likes the black...and if she doesn't, she's not stuck with it for terribly long. Light Mountain and Vegetal Color both come in black too.
Let us know if you try one! I'll be interested to hear how it works.

I am very sensitive to the smell of hair dyes and have been looking for a good natural one. I can attest that the Herbatint is very good. It has great coverage and a surprisingly pleasant smell. I would say it's OK to use, no burning ammonia smell must count for something. I actually have a new box that is waiting to be used once I find some time!

I have really dark hair and the only way to actually dye it a lighter color (I wanted a vivid purple color) is to bleach it, something I am not willing to do. So, I buy a dark shade that's close (aubergine for example) and just resign to the fact that it will only be slightly visible when I am in the sun.
Sorry, I don't think there is a natural way to radically change your hair color if you have dark hair! The best you can get is some interesting hues...

Too bad there aren't any natural hair dyes out there for guys. When there are, from my experience, you have to go to a lot more trouble to use it AND it is way more expensive than what I normally get at the drugstore. I bought a so-called natural men's hair coloring at Whole Foods once, paying twice as much as I normally do, which I cannot afford, but it was such a hassle to prepare it for use that I ended up tossing it out. There needs to be more research done on this one. No one seems to care. If there was ever one created that was NOT harmful to put on your eyebrows, was NOT any more of a hassle to mix (i.e., quick and easy like the common drugstore brands), and didn't cost more than a buck or so more than the usual drugstore brands, it'd be a big hit with health-conscious people -- IF they advertised sufficiently in health-oriented mags, online, etc. so that everyone could find out about it.

What kind did you use? It'd be interesting to know what to avoid for both men and women.
I went to Rainbow Grocery in San Francisco the other day (I haven't checked the aisles of Whole Foods yet to see what they have) and there were several different kinds of hair dye there, including the Herbatint one and the Light Mountain one mentioned above.
I wasn't paying too much attention to what products they have for men unfortunately as I hadn't quite seen your post, Galomorro, and was thinking more along the lines for dahlia's daughter. But this is what I found:
So the other options out there are Naturtint (although I can't find a manufacturer website for them), Tints of Nature and I guess they make Changes which is their semi-permanent line. They had the Light Mountain henna one and the Color the Gray. And at the bottom there on the second image, it looks like they have Logona which looks like it's made in the UK.
We did use the vegetal temporary black, and it came out very nice. My daughter has light brown hair, and the color came out really beautiful. Black with a subtle purplish effect. It was annoying that the applicator was not included. The directions are also not very good at all, so if you dont know how to dye hair, ask someone who does. I was also very disappointed in the companies that I clicked on from the links on this website to order it---the vitamin supply places. It appeared to be in stock when I ordered, then I got an email that it was out of stock with indefinite wait. Then I ordered from another company and had the same thing happened. I cancelled the first order, but then got an email the next day saying the order had shipped (even though it was supposedly out of stock.) So if you need dye for a certain event, as we did, I wouldnt order from vitamintree, and the like.
Naturtint is my favorite... I've been using it for years to dye my hair dark and it feels alot healthier than other hair dyes but does what it says it will... nothing weird like turning it green if I mix it with the wrong spoon. Plus it's easy to use... no more hassle than a normal home hair dye. I love it!

hi
the most natural hair dyes is henna / hena it comes in 2 colures black and red
you can find this at any Mediterranean markets / Arabs , Indians Pakistanis use it to dye hair and body parts on weddings with patterns, its used widely by old ladies to dye their hair, its easy to use:
- get henna powder / paste
- add water to form a paste enough to cover the hair length.
- Add some Vaseline around your hair line and ears to prevent unwanted smears
- Divide her hair and add the henna paste.
- Wrap a plastic hat or plastic bag on her hair, to give henna a chance to soak in.
- When henna get dry rub off henna from hair – it 'll come out like a powder.
- Wash her hair, dry it with old towel some henna powder 'll remain in hair
- combe and styl!
You can always ask the salesperson about the best way that suit what type of henna you got

My other reviewer (we review eco-friendly household and personal items) tried out the Tints of Nature and loved it (her review of ToN is here, if you want to read it). She did say that the color was initially more "flat" than what she was used to, but surprisigly, the color held up until her next touch-up. I was way too scared to try it, but I might do a root touch-up and see what happens. She did say that the colors run darker than what she's used to, so pick one shade lighter was her advice to me.

I just tried Light Mountain Natural Hair Color last night. It is AMAZING! I had been colouring my hair chemically the last 10 years, maybe more! I was thinking about the effects of the chemicals on my brain/ body as well as the planet. Over the last few years I have been cleaning up the chemicals in my house. I finally came to the last step, my hair. It was the hardest chemical to rid myself of. However, I did my research and found Light Mountain and I wonder why I didn't do this years ago!!!?? I was using some of the fake "natural" dyes from Sprouts and Whole Foods. Some of the natural dyes aren't really all that natural. The only truly natural dye is henna.
Light Mountain is probably the best henna I have used. I used henna based dyes when I was a teenager. I however, found they didn't work as well as Light Mountain. I was worried this product wouldn't work. However, it does. The key is following the directions to the word. I also, recommend letting the henna set in a cover dish for three hours before applying. I also would recommend leaving the dye in for 3 hours. When you wash the henna out, you will not see the results right away. It will slowly change over a 24 hour period. My hair was ripe with the dark brown around 12-15 hours after colouring it.
The colours are very dark too. I coloured mine dark brown and it is very dark brown. It has a lot of stunning red high lights too!
I have super-super long hair. It is almost to my tail bone. My hair is very thick. I have super Native American hair. The whole box covered my roots and half of my hair. My hair is so long that I would need a second box to colour my tips. I am not worried about my tips since, they are chemically processed.
Next time, I will probably use two boxes. I also recommend apply heat to it. I applied heat to my covered head every 30 minutes with a blow dyer. I used the provided plastic cap on my head. I also layered that with a shower cap.

I'm in love with this stuff! I will never dye my hair with anything else AGAIN!

Maybe it’s better to dye hair at hairdresser? In this case you will be sure in good results. I dyed my hair at Kensington hair salon when i had known that they used natural tint. Find your haidresser and this problem won't exist enough!
I like the vitality that natural hair dyes give to hair.
Hair coloring with natural dyes - how to use henna, indigo, cassia.
Hi. I was doing some background research on natural hair color products and saw this post and photo. Naturtint that you mention as not having a Web site now has a new U.S. Web site at www.naturtintusa.com. (For full disclosure, I am working on PR for the product line). Please do visit and also enter to win a year's supply of Naturtint. This ammonia-free vegetable based product (made in Madrid, Spain) has been a top seller in the health food segment and is now expanding into the beauty mass market. We welcome reviewers with blogs to try it. Thanks! Sandy
Henna is definately the way to go all natural. I became sensitive to chemicals after having Thyroid Cancer and treatment. I had to make changes, I use to love getting my hair done, and I still do, but now I do not have to sit in a salon, make appointments smell horrible chemicals from a salon. I do it myself, saved ALOT of money, slowed down my hair loss and have beautiful hair that I get so many compliments on =) you should try it.

Organic Color Systems colors are a great natural option. There is a full range of colors and lighteners, including fashion colors. OCS has absolutely no ammonia or resorcinol, and the lowest level of PPD's available in a permanent color. There are also semi-permanents that contain absolutely no PPD's. The developers are pharmaceutical grade hydrogen peroxide, and the lightening powders contain no bleach. This color line uses oils and heat to open the cuticle, and leaves hair feeling soft and healthier looking.

Naturtint is a Natural Permanent Hair color.
Works great!
And doesn't dry my hair out like the other "natural colors"
