The Tesla Model S...the official unveiling!

Well after quite a bit of talk, and quite a bit of waiting...the Tesla Model S is being unveiled today at the company's LA showroom.  Earlier today it would seem Digg's founder Kevin Rose leaked photos of the car but Tesla issued him a take down notice as the images were in fact real.  I guess they didn't want to spoil the surprise.

In any case, the car is being unveiled today.  Motor Trend published this photo:

And according to Jason Calacani's Twitter...(as reported by Tech Crunch):

Quote:
  • The car has 3G connectivity, as well as a computer with a 17 inch monitor in the center console.
  • The car will allow for three different removal battery packs, each capable of supporting a different maximum distance (there’s a 300 mile and 160 mile version). Partial battery charges take as little as 45 minutes.
  • Seats five adults, with two seats in the rear facing backwards

I like the different battery options.  That should give some flexibility in the price.  Rear-facing seats are a little weird, but overall, cool car.

You can reserve one now!!

$ 5,000 to reserve your spot in the line. No option to choose which version yet.  I hope I'm one of the top 100 :).

And the base price is only $49,000.

Here's a photo from the New York Times:

I just went through have of the reservation process....$5,000 to reserve one.  But it's fully refundable other than a $50 processing fee.  Now I just have to hope for a huge raise so I can actually afford one!

 hehehehehe....

I'm sure the 300 mi option is going to be much more expensive.  I'm hoping to get at least the 2XX mi option.

Elon Musk sent out a letter about the Model S.  Here it is:

Quote:

*Model S is here!*

* Just moments ago, we took the wraps off the Model S, an all electric family sedan that carries seven people and travels 300 miles per charge. We also launched a web site and began taking orders for this historic vehicle, which will likely be world's first mass-produced, highway-capable EV.

The Model S, which carries its charger onboard, can be recharged from any 120V, 240V or 480V outlet, with the latter taking only 45 minutes. By recharging their car while they stop for a meal, drivers can go from LA to New York in approximately the same time as a gasoline car. Moreover, the floor-mounted battery pack is designed to be changed out in less time than it takes to fill a gas tank, allowing for the possibility of battery-pack swap stations.

The floor-mounted powertrain also results in unparalleled cargo room and versatility, as the volume under the front hood becomes a second trunk. Combining that with a four-bar linkage hatchback rear trunk and flat folding rear seats, the Model S can accommodate a 50-inch television, mountain bike *and* surfboard simultaneously. This packaging efficiency gives the Model S more trunk space than any other sedan on the market and more than most SUVs.

"Model S doesn't compromise on performance, efficiency or utility -- it's truly the only car you need," said Tesla CEO, Chairman and Product Architect Elon Musk. "Tesla is relentlessly driving down the cost of electric vehicle technology, and this is just the first of many mainstream cars we're developing."

Tesla expects to start Model S production in late 2011. The company believes it is close to receiving $350 million in federal loans to build the Model S assembly plant in California from the Dept of Energy's Advanced Technology Vehicle Manufacturing Program.

*Building on Proven Technology*

Tesla is the only production automaker already selling highway-capable EVs in North America or Europe. With 0-60 mph in 3.9 seconds, the Roadster outperforms almost all sports cars in its class yet is six times as energy efficient as gas guzzlers and delivers 244 miles per charge. Tesla has delivered nearly 300 Roadsters, and nearly 1,000 more customers are on the waitlist.

Teslas do not require routine oil changes, and they have far fewer moving (and breakable) parts than internal combustion engine vehicles. They qualify for federal and state tax credits, rebates, sales tax exemptions, free parking, commuter-lane passes and other perks. Model S costs roughly $5 to drive 230 miles a bargain even if gasoline were $1 per gallon.

The anticipated base price of the Model S is $49,900 after a federal tax credit of $7,500. The company has not released options pricing. Three battery pack choices will offer a range of 160, 230 or 300 miles per charge.

But the anticipated sticker price doesn't tell the full story. Model S costs half as much as a Roadster, and it's a better value than much cheaper cars. The ownership cost of Model S, if you were to lease and then account for the much lower cost of electricity vs. gasoline at a likely future cost of $4 per gallon, is similar to a gasoline car with a sticker price of about $35,000. That's why we're positive this car will be the preferred choice of savvy consumers.

The standard Model S does 0-60 mph in under six seconds and will have an electronically limited top speed of 130 mph, with sport versions expected to achieve 0-60 mph acceleration well below five seconds. A single-speed gearbox delivers effortless acceleration and responsive handling. A 17-inch touchscreen with in-car 3G connectivity allows passengers to listen to Pandora Radio or consult Google Maps, or check their state of charge remotely from their iPhone or laptop.

Tesla is taking reservations online and at showrooms in California. Tesla will open a store in Chicago this spring and plans to open stores in London, New York, Miami, Seattle, Washington DC and Munich later this year.

*We're certain you'll be hearing a lot more about Tesla in the weeks and months ahead, and we look forward to seeing you at the stores we're opening soon!

yea...rear-facing seats???  how weird.  mostly because from the pics it doesn't look like there is additional room in the back (any more than other sedans).  i can't wait to see pictures of the inside....anyone have links to some?

The website says five adults and two childrens.  mmmmm....  Since the car is a hatchback sedan, there should be some room behind the rear seats.  A set of fold down seats facing towards the back of the car for two small kids perhaps.  Can't wait to see the interior shots too.  :)

Yeah apparently it's got 5 standard seats and then the option to attach the 2 rear-facing seats for kids.  Apparently there's a ton of room in the rear of the car.  It certainly sounds very cool, just wish I could afford the $50k price tag!

I was going to say....I saw that it fit 7 people.  I forgot about those rear-facing seats.  I never much liked them as a kid but I guess you might like playing the waving game from the back of a Tesla.

There were cars with rear facing seats??

Looks like 520 Tesla Model S sedans were reserved in the first week since the official unveiling, according to a post on TechCrunch.  That rounds out to $2.6 million dollars in fees.

The Tesla S!!!!! The car reminds me of the new Maserati's. So much class in this car. Telsa is now taking $5,000 refundable deposits. I think the roll out date is 2011 or 2012.

I can definitely see Porsche and Mercedes Enthusiasts swapping from high end luxury to Telsa Luxury. My head is going to spin when I see this car in the street....I might just run into a pole from walking and staring!

I wonder if Motor Trend or Car and Driver will be reviewing the Tesla and compare it to the Skyline that just came out.

INSANE!!!!

Yesterday, two Tesla Model S cars were on display at the Menlo Park Tesla showroom.  They've got a pretty busy schedule apparently.  One (without a complete interior, just a shell with silhoutte seats) will hang out at the Menlo Park showroom for another day or so.  Its partner in crime will be heading down to LA today (with the first to shortly follow it).

Well...of course...I'm a Tesla fan and jumped at the chance to take a peek at the car in real life.  And conveniently I was in the neighborhood.  It was on display from 10 to 6; when I got there, there were maybe 20 people including the staffers at the show room.  They had some fancy ropes around the car with the interior and signs asking you not to touch the car unless you were accompanied by a Tesla staff member.

In any case, you can read all sorts of descriptions about the car elsewhere and info about the specs.  So I guess I'll just jump in to what's a little more interesting....the pictures.  (Oh, I also took a little walk around video but I'll get that posted sometime tomorrow.)

(yours truly sitting in the car...too bad I couldn't drive away with it...I'm sure no one would have noticed)

(Yes, that's me...making eyes at the Model S...yeah.....)

Nice photos stins.  Definitely a sweet looking car.

Well done Stins - looks great - like a real car and not one of the funny bunnies you see on the net.

Probably be a while before they get over here I am afraid!

So it is janky....but here's that little walk around video of the Tesla Model S:

Apologies for my shaky hand and all the people in the way!

I wasn't too in to having "smileys" on the site at first, but that one is actually how I feel, haha. Very exciting stuff...I've been a Tesla fan boy for a while here...
