Natracare Organic 100% Cotton Tampons

Pros: 100% organic cotton

Cons: price is high if not bought in bulk

When I became pregnant, I decided I wanted to change my lifestyle around and try to live greener and raise my daughter greener. After I gave birth, I began to use these and they are wonderful alternative to those who want to live green but are not ready to start using a Divacup. I will never go back to Tampax Pearl; I don't know what I was thinking using them, what a waste. I use the non-applicator tampons because less waste which I found are very easy to insert.
They are a little pricey if you buy the box by itself but if you buy in bulk you can save a lot of money and you won't have to purchase any for about a year. It's 12 boxes of 20 tampons each = 240 tampons for $56. average price is about 23 cents a tampon.

Pros: organic, no wasteful applicators

Cons: no applicators so it's a little...more difficult, not the cheapest, still disposable

I've been using the Natracare organic tampons for a while now.  I like the quite a bit.  I mean, you might think a tampon is a tampon is a tampon.  But, if you eat organic, you would think you would want something you...err...put "in there" to be organic too.  That's the last place I want to think about pesticides going.  And of course, cotton production (the traditional way) does use a fair amount of that.  So I feel much better using Natracare.

In terms of being "eco," they're still disposable and obviously anything disposable is inherently less-eco.  So they're not as eco friendly as your reusable menstrual cups or your reusable pads or what have you.  But they're less wasteful than those ridiculous Pearl Tampax or whatever that come with the fancy plastic applicators.  The Natracare come packed into a tiny box, don't have the applicators (so you're saving waste there and saving packaging waste based on the reduced space need for packaging aforementioned applicators).  Each Natracare tampon is wrapped in a plastic wrapper, but I personally like knowing my tampons are good and clean.

At the end of the day, if you're a tampon user, I would recommend these.  And they'll stay a regular on my shopping list.

These are a bit more expensive than conventional brands (although some conventional brands with fancy plastic applicators cost more), but it really is nice to know that they're natural/unbleached.  They work great, although not as comfortable to insert as those fancy plastic applicators...

Pros: Natural, no nasty stuff, works well

Cons: A bit more expensive.

I'm very happy with this product.  I feel better knowing I'm not exposing myself to chlorine and unnatural fibers.  This product works very well and I've had no more issues with this tampon than any other that I've used.

Pros: Works well, organic

Cons: Still is wasteful

I have been using these for about a year now and I love the fact that I am not exposing myself to huge amounts of pesticides every month.  I know these are still quite wasteful but, I find that I use less of them than regular tampons for some reason so it has helped me to decrease the amount of waste each month. They are a tad expensive but like I said I do use less of them so it all works out in the end.

Natracare Organic 100% Cotton Tampons
Description:

Natracare tampons were developed as a direct response to health and environmental concerns about dioxin pollution caused by chlorine bleaching, the extensive use of pesticide spraying on conventionally grown cotton, and the use of rayon and other synthetics in tampons. Many women are unaware that rayon and rayon-cotton blends are widely used in the manufacture of tampons. Rayon is commonly chlorine-bleached, and is a highly absorbent fibre. Dioxin, a toxic carcinogen, is a by-product of all chlorine bleaching methods and is also found throughout the environment in varying levels as a by-product of pesticide spraying and pollution from incinerators. Dioxin has been found to collect in the fatty tissues of animals, including humans and should, therefore, be a real concern for women. Published scientific reports have shown that evidence is growing that even low levels of dioxins may be linked to cancer, endometriosis, low sperm counts and immune system suppression. Considering a woman may use as many as 11,000 tampons in her lifetime, she may be subjecting herself to additional dioxin exposure. Natracare tampons are made from only certified organic 100% cotton and are the only fully certified organic cotton tampons available in the world today. They are non-chlorine bleached and women can be reassured that they do not contain synthetic materials, such as rayon, or chemical additives such as binders or surfactants. Certified organic cotton removes the risk of direct exposure to residues from chemical pesticides and fertilisers used on traditional cotton.
