Pros: One jar lasts for months, cleans well including crystal and china,
Cons: Sometimes leaves a residue

Last year (2007) near Earth Day, I was trying to be more environmentally aware. I was out of my normal gel dishwasher liquid and was scouring the aisles of the supermarket for a new eco-friendly product. As it was near Earth Day, this product was on sale, so I decided to try it. I was skeptical because I have a pre-teen son who's idea of rinsing the dishes before putting them in the dishwasher is shaking them over the garbage bin. Also, I had had unpleasant experiences with powder cleaners in the past.

This product exceeded my expectations. Every once in a while there is a little residue, but I think it's when the dishwasher just needs a plain rinse cycle. Another great sales feature was that the product lasted for months. The jar says 64 loads; I bought one jar in April and didn't need another one until November. On average we have 1-2 loads of dishes per week.

Pros: Abrasive grains, highly concentrated, rinses clean
Cons: Glassware not completely clear, but very close
Biokleen Automatic Dish Powder is the winner for me among eco-friendly dishwashing detergents.

I tried quite a number of them over the course of almost one year and they all had the same problem: dishes came out with a nasty film all over them, especially glassware.

Now, the Biokleen is not perfect. You will still probably get more of a crystal-clear transparent shine from a conventional detergent full of phosphates and chlorine that poison our oceans and rivers.

The point is: for eco-friendly products, this one is the cleanest clean you can get. And it's very close to perfect. My dishwasher is old and not that great but we rarely re-wash anything that comes out after using Biokleen.

When you see it in the store you'll think it's expensive, but it's not. The container isn't very big, and the price tag will be large, and you'll freak out. But read the label closely. You get 64 loads out of this small drum. The drum lasts a long time, and it is nice and compact under our sink.

As a tip: we get the best results if we put a level tablespoon in the prewash compartment and HALF that in the actual main wash compartment. Using less for the main wash has worked best and given us the cleanest rinse. If you add more for the final wash, you'll get some white crusty residue dried on your dishes afterward. So we tend to go heavy on pre-wash, and light on the main wash. That's worked out the best for us.

Hope you decide to give this product a try. It's worth it. We also use their laundry detergent and have been very happy with it. Great company and great products.

Pros: Works great in our machine...little goes a long way.
Cons: Rather pricey...but no phosphorus..bonus

Have been doing dishes by hand for years...always thought it was better for enviroment etc. We bought our house and it came with a high end dishwasher over a year ago. So our dilemma is finding a phosphorus free dish soap....we had been using Method, but I now question their "branding". So we bought this over a month ago....6 weeks or so and do about 2-3 loads of dishes a week. Our water is ultra-soft as we have a super reverse osmosis/charcoal house water pump and system....great water. Anyway...it works great with our machine...and we understand it uses less water too. So we are happy except when we run out of dishes...

In any case this stuff works great....like a tablespoon and its fantastic. Of course I dont have anything to compare it to...but our stuff comes out clean and pretty spotless....I am looking at getting a big box of this so I dont have to get it online via 13 bucks a whack. Looks like this two pounds will last at least 6 and maybe 8 months though.

Pros: cleans, no artificial scent, no residue
Cons: none

I've tried most of the leading brands of green automatic dish powder and I think this is the best. One small container takes up hardly any room in your cabinets & lasts forever. It cleans well and doesn't leave any residue or any fake lemon scent.
