AFM Safecoat Transitional Primer

Pros: Everything

Cons: titanium dioxide smell, but that's the same with anything white

Goes on easy, dries quickly, cures perfectly, and makes a picture perfect painting surface.  Best primer I have ever used, and I'm glad to know it isn't killing me or my family!

Pros: Amazing adhesion...even to oil-based paint

Cons: Not easy to find. Why doesn't True Value or Ace carry it???

I hate painting!  The preparation usually takes longer than the actual paint job and I find myself wondering why I didn't hire a pro.  That said, I always use one coat of primer and two coats of finish for every job, so I don't have to paint again for many years.  Normally, I use Kilz primer, which will stick to anything.  In the past year or two, I've been reading more about the health issues of using standard paint products, so I decided to try the AFM products, since they have the longest track record of making materials for those with serious immune system disorders.  Well, I was impressed!  Yes, it still has some odor to it.  But nothing compared to the standard stuff!  After it was finished with two coats of paint, the odors were gone.  I just read somewhere that most eco-friendly paints will still release formaldehyde!!!  According to many sources, AFM products are the only ones that are completely free of offgassing.  I even used it over existing oil-based enamel and it worked great.

Cons: Bothersome, strong, lingering odor, too many rules for application

I was under the impression that this primer would be low in odor; afterall, the website stated "naturally low in odor" but it's definitely not.  My plasterer got dizzy and developed a headache during application.  My husband thought the fumes were strong too.  You can only imagine how I reacted to it given that I'm chemically sensitive and pregnant.  It's been two weeks and despite us using fans, windows open, radiant heat and air purifiers to help cure and eliminate the odor; the odor is still lingering.  It's not fun when your nursery and your bedroom are malodorous.

Description:

Safecoat Transitional Primer is a premium quality, waterbased, flat finish universal primer specifically formulated to solve difficult application problems without the use of toxic and malodorous chemicals. Because it has an extremely tight and efficient polymer network, it is when properly applied particularly well suited for transitioning from existing oil based painted surfaces to waterbased coatings. It is when properly applied useful as a stain blocker for many of the knot holes, water soluble stains and oils, tannins and terpenes in wood which can “bleed through” to the surface upon the application of traditional waterbased primers. Like all Safecoat paints, it is the least toxic product of its type, and contains no naphtha or other aromatic solvents, and no formaldehyde, ethylene glycol, ammonia, acetone, heavy metals, crystalline silica or other carcinogenic or hazardous materials. Safecoat Transitional Primer is naturally low in odor, and unlike other paints contains no masking agents or fragrances to hide the smells of toxic chemicals. SCS CERTIFIED - LEED QUALIFIED
