Heat Pump Water Heater. This unit works in conjunction with an electric water heater. This is referred to as a hybrid system, since either unit can heat the water and the one that can operate most efficiently is the one that runs.
Heat Pumps are highly efficient because they move heat rather than generate it. This unit extracts heat from ambient air and transfer it into the water. It even harvests the heat form its compressor. When the ambient air temp is below 40 degrees F, the heat pump can not efficiently extract heat, so the normal electric water heating system is used.
As a side benefit, when the unit is running you get cooled dry air in the area. This can be beneficial in garage spaces or basements.
