Homemade Non Toxic Home Air Fresheners

It's easy to make homemade non toxic air fresheners right at home.

Why make homemade air fresheners?: 
 

• It's less toxic. In a recent study, the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) found hormone-disrupting chemicals known as phthalates in 12 air freshener products; some marketed as “all-natural” and “unscented” and none said that they contained phthalates. Additionally conventional air fresheners are a household source of VOCs. VOCs can cause major health issues.
• It's less expensive. Gathering the essential oils you may need will cost you a little a first, but essential oils go a long way, so in the end it's a huge deal.
• It's easy and custom. Most store bought air fresheners smell like fake chemicals or just plain weird. Homemade air fresheners are easy to make and can be customized to your taste. 

Homemade air freshener recipes:

Spicy Apple Scent... Great if you're already cooking.
 

• Core a large Roma Apple leaving the bottom layer of skin intact.
• Peel a ring of skin away from the top of the apple.
• Place your apple in a baking dish or old pie plate.
• Fill the hole in the apple with brown sugar, cloves, cinnamon, shredded orange peel, nutmeg, or other spicy scents.
• Cover the apple with water - it's fine if water seeps into the hole.
• Place the dish on top of a flat wood-stove or inside a fireplace over a grill. If you are cooking, go ahead and place the pan in the oven.
• The heat bakes the apple and releases an amazing scent that will fill your kitchen area. If you only used spices in your apple, you can mash it afterward for a spicy sauce.

Pennyroyal, Cinnamon, & Lavender Air Freshener...

You'll need, 1-2 oz. cedar shavings, 1/4 – 1/2 ounce dried pennyroyal, 1 1/2 oz. dried lavender, three or four whole cinnamon sticks.

To make: crush up your pennyroyal and lavender. A good way to do this is with a rolling pin. Place in a bowl and add cedar shavings. Grate some of the cinnamon into the bowl, then toss the ungrated sticks into the bowl as well. You can leave this out in a nice clay bowl or sew small bags with fabric, stuff them with the mix, and hang them in your closet. SAFETY NOTE: You should keep any homemade potpourri away from children or pets. Homemade mixes are pretty safe but pennyroyal ingested in large amounts can be dangerous and cedar shavings are not totally safe for pets.
 

Organic grapefruit lavender room spray...

• 1 cup water
• 1 cup vodka. Vodka helps to freshen and preserves the spray, but in a pinch, it’s not necessary. Your house will smell clean even without the alcohol.
• Organic pure essential oil - about 15-20 drops of lavender and 12-15 drops of grapefruit
• One empty refillable spray bottle

Mix all your ingredients in the spray bottle. Shake well before each use. Spray around your house.

Organic clove, orange, and cinnamon room spray...

• 1 cup water
• 1 cup vodka.
• Organic pure essential oil - about 10 drops of clove, 15-20 drops of orange, and 12 drops of cinnamon.
• One empty refillable spray bottle

Mix all your ingredients in the spray bottle. Shake well before each use. Spray around your house.

Easy as pie boiled cinnamon...

Boil whole cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, and a dash of nutmeg on the stove. To save energy, place all items in a bowl of boiling water, it'll still release a scent. When it cools down heat it in the microwave. You can also place all spices in an old tea pot on a woodstove top. You can even add a dash of orange essential oil or clove essential oil to this mix.
